Episode Highlights

How Liana Ling Started

  • Liana talks about her background as an entrepreneur and how it was not typical for someone in her family to pursue entrepreneurship.
  • She comes from a middle-class family and was raised to believe that a traditional career path is the way to go.
  • She became a lawyer but realized that she was actually a frustrated entrepreneur who wanted to disrupt things in corporate America.
  • After returning from maternity leave, she was made redundant and realized that her identity as a lawyer was entwined with her career.
  • She gave herself permission to be an entrepreneur and bought a franchise to start her journey.
  • She learned a lot of skills from the franchise, including sales coaching, and eventually outgrow it.
  • She loves being an entrepreneur because it allows her to talk to and learn from other entrepreneurs.
  • Liana still enjoys being a lawyer but feels that her life really started when she became an entrepreneur.

The Greatest Challenges Liana Faced

  • Liana bought a franchise and got two clients even before attending the first training session
  • She sold services like SEO, PPC, and website design, but was in over her head and didn't know exactly how to deliver them
  • Liana didn't set expectations with her clients and didn't ask certain questions in the beginning
  • She hung on to those clients for years, which was a big challenge for her
  • Liana eventually started working with ideal clients who energized her, and it took her years to let go of her previous clients
  • She lost opportunities by spending all her time trying to figure out how to fulfill her previous clients' needs.

How Liana Worked with Ideal Clients

  • Liana wanted to master lead generation, sales, and entrepreneurship.
  • She did training including Tony Robbins' UPW and Business Mastery, and Michael Port's Book Yourself Solid program.
  • Michael Port's teachings about having a red valuable policy and not trying to please everybody resonated with Liana.
  • Her sales coach taught her that perfectionism sets a low standard and she shouldn't try to please everyone.
  • Liana now only works with ideal clients, rather than accepting anyone who will pay.

What Liana Recommends to Someone Starting Out

  • Liana recommends setting up a Red Velvet policy for ideal clients based on the characteristics of people you do your best work with.
  • In the beginning, you can make your rope loose and take on clients who may not fit perfectly.
  • It's important to avoid taking on less than ideal clients to avoid leaving money on the table and missing out on better opportunities.

Starting Out in Lead Generation

  • Liana suggests choosing two or three high-impact lead generation techniques that can be done consistently every day for those who are starting out with lead generation.
  • She recommends a systematic way of reaching out to the network, posting short videos on all platforms, and picking something that gets one in direct contact with their ideal client, such as a podcast or networking locally.
  • Liana created a podcast called "Be On the Elevator Pitch" to get her foot in the door for a sales call by using it as a way to find out more about her clients.
