Episode Highlights

Don’t Expect To Be Perfect in a Small Business

  • Your first business is not likely the one that will make you wealthy, Matthew said.
  • If you observe any uber-successful entrepreneur, you’ll see many prior ventures that provided the learning.
  • It's important to recognize that perfection is not attainable. Striving for it can hinder your progress.
  • Instead of aiming for perfection, focus on making incremental improvements. Learn from your mistakes.
  • Don't be afraid to take risks and try new things, even if you're not sure you'll succeed. Failure can be a valuable learning experience.
  • Embrace the idea of "progress, not perfection" and celebrate the small wins along the way.
  • Practice one tested way to grow a business. Commit to it.
  • Remember that everyone makes mistakes, even the most successful business owners. What sets them apart is their ability to learn from those mistakes and keep moving forward.

Don’t Get Paralyzed By Your Fears When Growing a Business

  • “We see new people get paralyzed by their worries about what’s coming,” Matthew said.
  • You will be drained of valuable motivation if you worry prematurely.
  • Fear is a natural emotion. It’s okay to feel it. But, it's important not to let your fears hold you back.
  • Identify the specific fears that are holding you back and try to understand why you're feeling them. This can help you develop strategies to overcome them.
  • Break down your goals into smaller, more manageable steps. This can help make the task at hand feel less daunting and overwhelming.
  • Diversify support from others, whether it's a trusted friend or a mentor. Talking through your fears with someone else can help you gain perspective and feel less alone.

Don’t Get Derailed By Your First Setback

  • When building a new product or service, understand that you will experience issues on a day-to-day basis.
  • At one time or another, every area of the business will feel like it’s falling apart. This is where you need to consolidate your customer base.
  • This is the strain that comes from building something that’s never existed before by someone who’s not done it before (that’s you).
  • Setbacks are a natural part of scaling a new business. They can be valuable opportunities for growth and learning.
  • Instead of getting discouraged by your first setback, try to approach it with a growth mindset. Ask yourself what you can learn from the experience and how you can use that knowledge to do better next time.
  • Don't take setbacks personally. Just because something didn't work out doesn't mean that you're a failure or that your ideas are bad. It simply means that you need to adjust your approach.
  • Use setbacks as a chance to get feedback from others. Ask for input from mentors, colleagues, or customers.
